William Morris

Updated: Mar 24, 2020

I visited the Victoria Albert Museum on a Saturday the 2nd of November 2019 and saw William Morris's room of his works. This work is titled The Bullerswood Carpet. This carpet was made in 1889. Morris collected textiles influenced by ancient Persian and Turkish examples. This carpet was a collaboration design with J.H Dearle. This carpet was constructed on a cotton wrap,hand-knotted with a woollen pile. I am truly stimulated by the scale, the use of the material and the use of repetition; will consider exploring those methods into my professional studio practice. The first image is an installation shot of his display room. The second image is a close-up installation shot. The third image shown is titled Peacock and Dragon curtain. This curtain was made in 1878. Morris has the most comprehensive patterns in all of his textile works. This curtain has a medieval-looking style in depth. Morris studied the collections of textile at the Victoria Albert Museum where it has influenced him in his interest in encouraging early textiles. This curtain is composed as a handloom, jacquard - woven woollen twill with braid trimmings. I am truly inspired by the scale, the use of the material and the use of repetition; will consider exploring those techniques into my professional studio practice.
