Susan Hiller

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

Susan Hiler is an American artist living in London. Her practice includes installations, video, photography, performance and writing. I visited the London Mithraeum Museum Bloomberg space on Tuesday the 11th of February 2020; where I observed Susan Hiller's exhibition. The images shown above are installation shots from her show. The exhibition was titled London Jukebox. Her exhibition was located on the ground floor. It took years for Susan Hiller to achieve the commission for London Jukebox. It got completed in 2018. The Jukebox was displayed; as a vintage style with a collection of seventy songs about London. This collection of London songs stands her tribute to the magnificently diverse stories that construct within the city's districts. She primarily prefers expressing distinctive periods, styles, subjects and communities. The artist's treasury expresses the enduring capacity of popular songs to trigger memories and associations and to reflect on distinct political and cultural significance. Susan Hiller was especially engaged in how people respond and cooperate with the control of voices and also the possibility of collective space for authentic awareness. As I wandered around the London Mithraeum Museum Bloomberg space; the entire room contained all the London song lyrics. The song lyrics were scattered everywhere on the walls along with a map of London. Susan Hiller's work instructed archaeology. Archaeology is characterised as a study of human history. Susan Hiller's exhibition delivered a nostalgic feeling as I related to the show as I have been; raised with all the songs in the Jukebox throughout my journey in the past. I could consider adding music in my future works and develop new ideas in my professional studio practice in the future. I also would research and interpret the terminology of archaeology and look at the map of London.
